Nick Hardwick talking about the Mandela Rules

29th February, Egham

At the end of 2015, the UN General Assembly is expected to adopt the Mandela Rules or ‘United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners’ to give them their formal title. Today, the Mandela Rules are the most important development in prison standards for half a century and set new operational and ethical standards fit for our time.

Nick Hardwick will consider both historic and international examples to reflect on the importance of the new rules and, at the end of his term as Chief Inspector of Prisons in England and Wales, use his experience to examine how far prisons in England and Wales measure up and to insist on the changes necessary to ensure that they do.
