Dates for your diary: Training visits and the AGM

Training Visit to Cookham Wood – July 4th

HMPYOI Cookham Wood is a public sector prison for boys aged 15-17 on remand or sentenced. The prison shares a site with HMP Rochester and Medway Secure Training Centre. Cookham Wood was designated a YOI in 2008 and is one of the four remaining YOIs in England. New residential wings and an education block were opened in early 2014. The prison has an operational capacity of 188 and receives young people from a wide catchment area including London, the South East, southern England and East Anglia.

The training day will include a tour of the prison, presentations on Behaviour Management, Safeguarding and Health and Well Being.  The aim is to give you some insight into the regime and support delivered to this vulnerable and challenging group of boys.

The packed day starts at 10.00am (coffee available from 9.30am).  There will be a small charge for lunch (£4.00) payable on the day.  To book your place today please email Anne Finlayson on

Training Visit to Long Lartin – October 5th

HMP Long Lartin is a dispersal prison within the High Security Estate. It is situated in the Vale of Evesham. The original premises date from the early 1970s, although they have been modified by successive programmes of adaptation and improvement.

The prison has a CNA of 625. It holds adult males. About a quarter of them will typically be from Category A; almost all of the remainder are from Category B. In addition, there are usually a small number of men who are High Risk Category A. All of the prisoners are accommodated in single cells. There are three residential blocks that accommodate vulnerable prisoners. The remaining five wings are for mainstream prisoners.

The aim of the day is to understand the differences in monitoring a high secure prison from other prisons.  We are grateful to the Governor who will be available for a Q &A session. As you might expect numbers are limited so to ensure you have a space e mail Sue Bird
